Body, light and emptiness in Volokitin’s painting
Artem Volokitin (b. April 24, 1981, Chuhuiv, Kharkiv region) graduated from Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts in 2005. He received the main Pinchuk Art Prize (2009), interned at Antony Gormley’s London studio (2010), and was nominated for the Future Generation Art Prize (2011).
He works across oil painting, video art, photography, and object art. Volokitin’s figures float in voids illuminated by light—exploring body, emptiness, and transcendence.
He represented Ukraine at the 2015 Venice Biennale, and exhibited at Art Copenhagen, Saatchi Gallery London, Vienna Contemporary, and Dallas Art Fair. His works appear in museums and private collections across Europe, Ukraine, the USA, and Australia.
Light to me is not background but breath. It strips the body and leaves silence where the viewer can find themselves.
