"Ai-Petri" by Oleg Tistol is not a landscape, but a reflection on territory as a cultural construct. The mountain’s iconic, almost sterile silhouette is juxtaposed with a decorative field of pink ornament — a visual code from the Soviet past. The artist blurs the line between ideological landscape and stylized fiction, asking: do we see a place, a memory, or a decorative projection of what it’s meant to be?

Description

"Ai-Petri" by Oleg Tistol challenges the notion of landscape as a neutral form of representation. The artist deliberately uses a recognizable geographic silhouette — long associated with Crimea — and sets it against a decorative backdrop filled with ornamentation rooted in late-Soviet visual aesthetics. The mountain is no longer a natural form, but a graphic icon: familiar, yet detached. The pattern is not background noise — it carries cultural codes that replace reality with a stylized, ideologized projection.

This visual break between landscape and decor functions as a critical gesture. Tistol investigates how visual memory of place is constructed — not through lived experience, but through repeated and embellished images. The work is restrained in form yet conceptually charged: it speaks of cultural inertia and of political and visual overlays that turn geography into symbol. Ai-Petri here is not a mountain, but the idea of one, dissolved into ornamental imagination.
